A Method for Prayer
by Matthew Henry
Edited by Ligon Duncan. True prayer comes from the heart, so why do we need a method? The great devotional commentator and pastor shows here that Christians benefit from discipline just as much as talking freely with God. You will discover the methods Jesus taught, look at styles of prayer, and see helpful examples. Duncan has incorporated some of Henry's other work on prayer.

According to Promise
by CH Spurgeon
These promises are for every believer yet each will admit to not fully experiencing what is promised. Spurgeon helps us to appreciate that all God's promises are the birthright of each Christian. It is not presumptious or unreal to expect to enjoy what God has promised. We are to measure what God can do by his generous promises, not by our level of expectation. C. H. Spurgeon was the foremost preacher of his time and pastored a large church in London during the second half of the 19th century. He was called 'The prince of preachers' and had significant effect on both Church and Society. Spurgeon had the gift of getting right to the heart of a matter in a style that was memorable and profound.

Am I A Christian?
by James Fraser
In his book Heaven on Earth, Thomas Brooks wrote, A man may be a true believer, and yet would give all the world, were it in his power, to know that he is a believer. To have grace, and to be sure that we have grace is heaven on this side of heaven. James Fraser endured a long conflict with doubts. This little book, taken from his memoirs (Memoirs of the Rev. James Fraser of Brea, found in Scottish Puritans: Select Biographies, volume two), is a helpful record of how he overcame his fears, and arrived at a firm assurance of his salvation in Christ.

Attributes of God
by AW Pink
The foundation of our knowledge of God rests upon knowing what he is like. Without understanding God's attributes, we have a skewed perception of him--often one cast in our own image. We need more than just a theoretical knowledge of God in order to worship him as he desires. This classic work of Arthur W. Pink invites readers to discover the truth about seventeen attributes of God, including his sovereignty, immutability, patience, love, faithfulness, and much more. Pink shows readers a God who is alive, all-powerful, and active in his creation. The perfect introductory text, The Attributes of God also has enough depth and meat to satisfy the more experienced reader.

Autumn Gold
by Clifford Pond
Old age can be endured or enjoyed, regarded as a burden or accepted as a blessing. In this wise and positive book Clifford Pond shows how old age can be enjoyed as it is lived in the light of God's presence and in accord with God's Word. He confronts head on some of the pitfalls of old age such as a negative attitude to life and the tendency to be always living in a past 'golden' age. He shows how these and other faults may be overcome by applying the principles and the promises and Scripture to our lives But throughout his primary emphasis is on enjoying old age to the glory of God. Clifford Pond skilfully blends spiritual insights into Scripture with much practical counsel on such matters as keeping fit, when to give up one's home, making a will, and remarrying after the death of a wife or husband. And he draws on the wisdom of other senior citizens and the experience of those who have cared for a loved one suffering from a prolonged physical illness or senile dementia. As Peter Tervet points out in his foreword this book meets a real need. First, it helps Christians (and others) to prepare for retirement. Second, it encourages the senior citizen to live positively in old age. Third - and by no means least - it helps the younger generation to understand the problems and the challenges of old age. And it has much to say to churches about valuing and caring for the elderly in their midst.

Beyond Amazing Grace
by Todd Murray
No one who knew John Newton as a young lad would ever have dreamed that this teenage rebel, profane sailor, naval deserter and slave-trader would one day write the lyrics to one of the best-known hymns of all time, 'Amazing Grace'. The story of how such a notorious sinner was converted to Christ and went on to become an equally noteworthy pastor and a leader of the Evangelical movement in eighteenth-century England is simply astounding. In compiling this selection from his writings, Todd Murray has made Newton's gentle pastoral wisdom available to a new generation of readers.

by Matthew Henry
"I here humbly offer you, Christian reader, some assistance in that great and good work, which you have to do, and are concerned to do well, when you attend the table of your Lord. I send this abroad under the protection and blessing of heaven; with a hearty prayer to God to forgive whatever is mine, that is, what is amiss and defective in the performance; and graciously to accept what is his own, that is, whatever is good and profitable." - Matthew Henry "No treatise on The Lord's Table possesses more excellencies, nor fewer defects than Matthew Henry's THE COMMUNICANT'S COMPANION. It is very plain, very pious, and very practical." - Rev. John Brown of Edinburgh, Scotland (1825)

Experimental Knowledge of Christ
by John Elias
"This book contains eleven great sermons by the great Welsh itinerant preacher, John Elias (1774-1841), all newly and ably translated from the Welsh by Owen Milton. Here you will find a feast of biblical, doctrinal, experiential, and practical food that shows how great preachers in ages past proclaimed the whole counsel of God over a period of time while remaining faithful in expounding individual texts in accord with their major themes. These sermons, which richly expound nearly every major doctrine of grace, are as relevant and helpful as when they were first written. Here you will find the sovereignty of God and the responsibility of man persuasively expounded. Elias's sermons exhibit all the strengths of a godly preacher-pastor-writer. Read them slowly and prayerfully, and, with the Spirit's blessing, you will grow in the grace and knowledge of Christ."

Great God of Wonders
by Maurice Roberts
We all become like the objects we worship. How important then that Christians should be focused on the Great God of Wonders revealed in Scripture. To think about God aright is the most exciting occupation possible for any created being, says Maurice Roberts. In every aspect of the Christian life dealt with in these articles, Roberts' emphasis is always on the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus. These writings, originally published in the Banner of Truth magazine, provide thought- provoking, spiritually invigorating, practical and warmly biblical reading.

Happiness of Heaven
by Maurice Roberts
While belief in heaven is essential to the Christian faith, the fact that pilgrim believers have not yet experienced heaven leaves us with many questions about what it will be like. In The Happiness of Heaven, Maurice Roberts surveys Holy Scripture to tell us what heaven is all about. In his characteristic style, Roberts discusses the biblical data clearly and relevantly, making soul-searching application at every turn. This is not just a book of interesting facts about what heaven is like; it is an appeal to men and women to find their happiness in the eternal comfort of God in Christ.

Homeward Bound
by Edward Hartman
The concept of dying well has been very real to Ed Hartman since August 1995. Hartman was studying at Westminster Theological Seminary , California and had just discovered a treatise by the Puritan author William Perkins on the ‘Right Manner Of Dying Well’. This discovery was no accident, as it was a matter of minutes later that Ed discovered that his wife, the mother of their 4 children, was not at all well. Amy Hartman was diagnosed with a brain tumour, which after 6 months of much prayer, and great heartache, proved to be terminal. With this traumatic experience behind him, Hartman deals with the topic of preparing your life, and the life of those you love, for death in a practical and thoroughly Christ-centred manner. Hartman looks at our most important relationships, with God, with our spouses, with our family and with those around us. He shares with us the advice of Perkins and other Puritans who lived in a time that had a much healthier attitude towards, and much closer relationship with, death. He concludes that the primary aim of those sincerely desiring to die well, must be to have Christ at the centre of everything – and that true devotion to Christ comes only through our relationship with him.

This book looks at the lives and writings of four women who lived between the 17th and the 19th centuries in England and America. Most notably, throughout the wide range of situations these four women experienced they shared a common perspective. Their contentment and happiness did not depend on good health or a happy family. It came from living for God.

Letters of Samuel Rutherford
by Samuel Rutherford
What a wealth of spiritual ravishment we have here! Rutherford is beyond all praise of men. Like a strong-winged eagle he soars into the highest heaven and with unblenched eye he looks into the mystery of love divine. There is, to us, something mysterious, awe-creating and superhuman about Rutherford's letters. This edition is a noble volume, and we shall measure the soundness of Scotch religion very much by the sale of this work. One page of Rutherford is worth a thousand tomes of the Downgrade frothiness. "We think it meet to take a paragraph from Dr Andrew Bonar's prefatory sketch: 'The extravagance in sentiment alleged against them by some is just that of Paul, when he spoke of knowing 'the height and depth, length and breadth' of the love of Christ; or that of Solomon when the Holy Ghost inspired him to write 'The Song of Songs'. Rather would we say of these letters what John Livingston, in a letter, says of John Welsh's dying words' 'O for a sweet of this fanatic humor!' In modern days Richard Cecil has said of Rutherford, 'He is one of my Classics; he is a real original'; and in older time, Richard Baxter, some of whose theological leanings might have prejudiced him, if anything could, said of his Letters, 'Hold off the Bible, such a book the world never saw'." 'When we are dead and gone let the world know that Spurgeon held Rutherford's Letters to be the nearest thing to inspiration which can be found in all the writings of mere men.' C.H. SPURGEON

Lifting up of the Downcast
by William Bridge
Depression is not unique to our times. To encourage the depressed, Bridge wrote this choice book and filled it with the kind of rich encouragement which our generation too rarely hears. These thirteen sermons on Psalm 42:11, preached at Stepney, London, in the year 1648 are the work of a true physician of souls. In dealing with believers suffering form spiritual depression, Bridge manifests great insight into the causes of the saints’ discouragements such as great sins, weak grace, failure in duties, want of assurance, temptation, desertion and affliction. A correct diagnosis is more than half the cure but Bridge does not leave his readers there. He gives directions for applying the remedy. For example in dealing with “great sins†he says, “If you would be truly humbled and not be discouraged; not be discouraged and yet be humbled; then beat and drive up all your sin to your unbelief, and lay the stress and weight of all your sorrow upon that sin.†The general causes of spiritual depression are the same in every age. Down cast Christians of the twentieth century can find help here as surely as did past generations.

Lord Our Shepherd
by Douglas MacMillan
All who attended the conference at which these addresses were delivered were immediately conscious that they were present at a unique occasion...Not only was the speaker a gifted preacher and an able expositor of the Word of God; prior to his call to the Christian ministry he had been a shepherd for 12 years. And he had taken Psalm 23 as his theme! Expectations were aroused. And they were not to be disappointed. It is a great joy to see these addresses...appearing in print. Christian doctrine must be translated into Christian experience, else it is arid and barren. That is the challenge, but also the comforting possibility, that the author holds before us in these addresses...all who read cannot but be helped and inspired.

Mystery of Providence
by John Flavel
First published in 1678, this little work well illustrates and explains the purpose of God for his people. Do we believe that everything in the world and in our own lives down to the minutest details is ordered by the providence of God? Do we ever take time to observe and meditate on the workings of providence? If not, are we missing much?
It should be a delight and pleasure to us to discern how God woks all things in the world for His own Glory and His people's good. But it should be an even greater pleasure to observe the particular designs of providence in our own lives. "O what a world of rarities", says John Flavel, "are to be found in providence" with what profound wisdom, infinite tenderness and incessant vigilance it has managed all that concerns us from first to last.
It was to persuade Christians of the excellency of observing and meditating upon this that Flavel first published his Mystery of Providence in 1678. Since then the work has gone through many editions. Based on the words "God that performeth all things for me"(Ps.57v2) this work shows us how providence works for us in every stage and experience of our lives. The book is richly illustrated from the lives of believers and from the author's wide reading in church history. There are avenues of spiritual knowledge and experience opened to the Christian in this work, which he probably never knew existed.

Suffering Saviour
by F. W. Krummacher
This series of devotional meditations on the final scenes in the life of Christ on earth has been prized by successive generations of Christians ever since its original publication in 1854. Translated almost immediately into English and frequently republished, the book has been described as the greatest single volume of the entire nineteenth century on the last days of Christ. As earthly ministry. Krummacher organizes his meditations around the structure of the Old Testament tabernacle. The first section, The Outer Court, covers the time from Jesus' announcement of His approaching death to His discourses on the way to Gethsemane. The central section, the longest, is entitled The Holy Place. It deals with Gethsemane, Judas' betrayal, Peter's denial, all the judicial proceedings, Christ's scourging, and the journey to Calvary. The final section, The Most Holy Place, covers the crucifixion itself, Christ's sayings from the cross, His agony and death, and His burial. This is a book to which all Christians, and especially preachers, will want to return frequently, to have their hearts warmed afresh, and their love to, and zeal for, their Saviour rekindled.

Thought of God
by Maurice Roberts
Maurice Roberts' articles speak to the needs of the times. They have God and his Word as their starting place; and their horizon stretches beyond time to eternity. "Every article is a picturesque painting. And the words are shades and colours. They seem to be ordinary, simple words - but in the hand of the master they work wonders. The thought like a spear, penetrates to the heart and does not allow itself to be forgotten. And what thoughts they are!" - Vera Rodaslov comments on the Russian version of this book.
